Poetry Council Donates Assets to NC Poetry Society

After 61 years of supporting poetry in the state of NC, the Poetry Council of NC concluded its operations with Poetry Day at Catawba Valley Community College on April 20, 2013.

Following conclusion of all outstanding business, the Council’s fiscal assets were donated to the NC Poetry Society to create an annual competition for a new book of poems by a NC poet. The competition has now been created, and is called the Lena M. Shull Book Contest. Complete guidelines and news regarding the Lena M. Shull Book Contest are available on the NC Poetry Society website.

The Council’s physical assets, consisting of 1000-book collection of NC poetry housed at Catawba College Library in Salisbury, NC, was also donated to the NC Poetry Society.

Poetry Day has become a NC Poetry Society event featuring the announcement and recognition of the Lena M. Shull Book Contest winner as well as workshops and readings by poets from western NC. News regarding Poetry Day is also available on the NC Poetry Society website.

The final officers of the Poetry Council are confident that the NC Poetry Society will utilize these resources effectively to carry on the tradition of supporting poetry in NC as envisioned by the Council’s founders in 1952.
