Professor Almost, by Lisa Brewer

Ellen T. Johnston Hale Contest for Light Verse 2010 Second Place

Lisa Brewer
PROFESSOR ALMOST

Post-graduate degree in hand (ABD),
He is THE MAN.
He’s smug, he smirks, with comments snarky.
(He can’t remember where he left his car key.)

And yet, it seems, he would impart
Some profound knowledge from the heart
To lesser minds in need of knowing.
(He can’t remember where he’s going.)

Their faces fixed, in rapt attention,
Wait for — anything! — he’d stoop to mention.
Adoring faces, by him marked —
(He can’t remember where he parked).
