I Am Thinking of Horses
by Randy W. Pait

It is time to think of horses,
because they are calm and their faces
are sad and intelligent.

They walk easily
among the rough trees, and munch,
with simple gratitude, the grass.

Friend, where are you going?
When you walk into this morning stillness
to breathe again the cold air,

look across the field of tall brown grass.
Do you see the horse coming to meet you,
white breath rising from his nostrils?

He will not tell you what you want to hear.
Go to him anyway.
He has been waiting for you.
